About Us

Corporate history

Dixon Mitchell Investment Counsel was established in 2000 as an asset manager for both individual and institutional clients. Today, DM manages over $5bn on behalf of Canadian families and organizations, such as endowments, charities, pensions, and Indigenous communities. Dixon Mitchell is headquartered in Vancouver, with a secondary office in Calgary, and is entirely owned by its active and retired employees.

Investment Philosophy

DM was founded on the belief that attention to risk management forms the foundation of a successful long-term investment plan. At the portfolio level, this means allocating capital across fixed income and equity asset classes to offset known and unforeseen cash flow needs and consulting with each client regularly to ensure that the structure remains appropriate. On a security basis, DM mitigates risk by diversifying positions across industry sectors and economic sensitivities and by undertaking a deep research approach into each of our holdings. This entails building and regularly updating financial models and other quantitative analytical tools, as well as spending significant time with management teams to better understand each company’s culture and its care for both shareholder capital and the community in which it operates.

Stewardship

When Dixon Mitchell was founded more than two decades ago, the goal was to provide clients with a focused investment management approach, to ensure interests were aligned, and to keep costs down. In other words, the firm was established to be a true steward of client wealth. By DM’s registration and through the corporate culture they have built, they carry a fiduciary duty to all clients and work tirelessly to protect and grow their assets in the same they care for their own.
